Entrepreneurship requires more than ambition. It requires discipline with how you invest your most valuable assets: your time, your energy, your focus, and your money.

Many entrepreneurs make a costly mistake early in their journey. They try to be too generous, too nice, and too available for everyone else. They attend events, respond to every invitation, spend time on other people’s priorities, and donate their best assets while their own business, goals, and projects remain unfinished.

This lesson comes from my own entrepreneurial journey and from mistakes that cost me years of progress. I believed I was being supportive and kind to others, but in reality I was escaping the hard work required to build my future. Important tasks were delayed, projects remained incomplete, and my focus was constantly pulled away from the work that truly mattered.

Building a successful business requires protecting your focus and being intentional about how you spend your time and energy. Sometimes progress requires saying no to invitations, events, distractions, and even well-intentioned people who do not fully understand the importance of your goals.

Entrepreneurs who succeed learn to prioritize their mission. They protect their time, avoid unnecessary noise, and stay committed to the work that moves their vision forward.

This message is a reflection on a mistake I made and a reminder for entrepreneurs who want to build something meaningful: your future depends on where your attention, effort, and discipline are invested each day.

Key Takeaways

  • Entrepreneurship requires intentional investment of your most valuable assets: time, energy, focus, and finances.
  • Trying to appear generous, cool, or constantly available can quietly pull you away from your real priorities.
  • Many entrepreneurs fail because they spend more effort supporting other people’s activities than building their own future.
  • Distractions often come from events, invitations, and social environments that are not aligned with your goals.
  • Saying no to unnecessary activities is often the same as saying yes to your business, your growth, and your long-term vision.
  • Successful entrepreneurs protect their focus and avoid wasting their best assets on noise and distractions.
  • Progress and fulfillment come from consistent work on meaningful goals, not from constantly reacting to other people’s priorities.
  • Reflecting on your habits, daily choices, and time investment helps identify behaviors that may be slowing your progress.

(0:07) Hey everyone, welcome to the Breakthrough Entrepreneurs Show, where we empower entrepreneurs (0:12) to overcome the challenge of work-life balance, burnout, break bad, old, unhealthy, negative (0:18) habits, behaviors, build new habits, create new resources, new routines. I'm your host (0:25) Mohamed Faraj, and today our topic is avoid this common mistake in entrepreneurship. You (0:32) see, entrepreneurship requires time, energy, effort, in order to build a successful business, (0:43) in order to become a very successful entrepreneur. And it's super important that we become aware (0:52) of our habits, our routines, the people that we are hanging out, and the places, the events, (1:00) the activities that we are attending. And it's super important that we are investing (1:08) our best assets, our money, our finances, our time, our energy, our effort, most of (1:17) them on our goals, on our dreams, in our business. Because if you are someone with (1:25) a bad habit, where you are constantly trying to be cool, nice, too generous with others, (1:33) by donating your best assets for others, and not spending them or investing them on your (1:42) future, this is one of the reasons why you will fail miserably in entrepreneurship. And I am (1:49) talking about from my own personal experience. This is one of the reasons why I wasted years, (1:56) this is one of the reasons why I failed in my own entrepreneurship journey, and I didn't know (2:04) that. I didn't realize how our best assets are valuable in our entrepreneurship journey. So stay (2:14) tuned in this podcast episode, so you can learn from my own failure in my entrepreneurship journey, (2:22) so you can avoid this mistake, this failure, so you can grow, so you can break through in your (2:29) entrepreneurial life. You see, so many people out there, they're trying to be too cool, too kind, (2:38) too generous with their time, with their energy, with their finances, with their money, by showing (2:47) others how cool they are, how generous they are, how nice they are, how kind they are. You see, (2:54) out there, some people you have who love you, who care about you, who value your time, who value your (3:03) money, your finances, your energy, and they respect them, they understand you, and they support you. (3:12) But some people out there, they don't care. I'm telling you from my own personal experience. They (3:18) care about their events, their activities, their places, they care about their goals, about their (3:24) dreams, but they don't care so much about yours. So you, my friend, you're an entrepreneur, especially (3:33) a new entrepreneur trying to build a business. You go out, you donate your best assets with others, (3:43) you leave your work, you delay your tasks, your projects, you leave undone or uncompleted work (3:52) that you know that you should be working on, that you know that you should be completing. You go out, (3:59) you spend most of your day on a particular event or a particular activity with particular people, (4:06) and you come back home, you haven't done work. You come back home to your work, you see you have (4:14) so much work that you need to do, that you have stacked so many projects, so many tasks that you (4:22) should have been working on, that you're supposed to be completing them, but you don't care so much (4:30) about those. You care about other people's goals, you care about other people's events, activities, (4:37) but you don't care about yours. I remember years in my own entrepreneurship journey, I was trying (4:47) to build a business, I was running my own business, and I started my entrepreneurial journey, (4:54) but I made a very stupid mistake and I didn't know that.Because of my old negative bad habits, (5:02) I was constantly running away from home, I was constantly running away from my goals, (5:08) from my business. I thought working in my business on those tasks, on those projects, (5:14) was boring or I felt lonely. I found so many excuses that I could escape from, (5:24) but I didn't realize that I was failing, I was doing a big stupid mistake. You see, (5:31) so many people, they care about you, they love you, they know how important your goals are, (5:40) they know how important your future is, so they don't want to impact your goals, (5:48) they don't want to take most of your time, most of your energy, they don't want you to consume (5:55) so much of your energy or spend so much money on them. They respect you, they respect your assets, (6:04) but some people out there, they're careless people, they show you that they don't care so much, (6:14) so they end up distracting you, they end up taking most of your time, most of your energy, (6:22) spending most of your money. So it's super important that when we are setting goals for (6:30) our future, when we are starting to work on our business, that we are fully committed, that we are (6:36) fully focused, that we are laser focused on our business, on our goals, on our dreams, that we do (6:45) not declare our mission, our calling, our vision, and then later on we find ourselves spending most (6:55) of our time, most of our energy, most of our finances on unnecessary, irrelevant activities, (7:03) events with other people. It's super important that when we set goals, we need to commit to those (7:10) goals, we need to promise ourselves, our families, that we are working towards those goals, that we're (7:19) going to accomplish them, but not later on. You set goals, but later on you find yourself, you're (7:26) totally doing something else, and that you're not, you don't seem aligned with your goals, with your (7:33) ambitions. So many of us, we have bad habits, and those bad habits, they keep us stuck, so we escape (7:42) from home, we skip hard work, we delay so many tasks, projects, that we know that they are important (7:51) for our business. So do not let this failure, do not let this mistake, keep you stuck in your (8:00) entrepreneurship journey. Entrepreneurship journey requires hard work, you need to invest most of your (8:06) time, most of your energy, most of your finances, investing them on your business, on your goals, on (8:14) your dreams, and not waste them on unnecessary, irrelevant activities, events with other people, (8:22) because some of those people out there, they want to live an average life, they don't care about (8:28) goals, about big ambitions, and nor they care about yours. Why would you spend most of your time, (8:38) most of your finances, most of your energy, most of your effort with those people? (8:43) You see, sometimes I do have people in my life, that they try to distract me, or invite me, (8:51) sometimes I do have activities, events, that I could attend, but I reject them, I refuse them, I avoid them, (9:01) I know my business is important, I know my goals are important, my ambitions, they are my priority, (9:10) my future is my priority, my well-being, my health, my happiness, my successful future is number one (9:18) in my life, and nothing else.Sometimes there are sport events, for example, yesterday there was a (9:26) hockey, very important hockey game, I didn't go there, some people, they tried to invite me, I could have (9:34) accepted their invitations, I could have gone there to that game, but I didn't do that, I didn't want to (9:42) do the same mistake, I didn't want to be stuck, I don't want to repeat the same bad habit, instead (9:50) I went home, I worked on my business, I worked on my important projects, important tasks, and I was (9:58) happy at the end of the day, I made progress, I completed work, I don't care so much if that game (10:08) went well or not, I don't care so much if that team won the game or not, I don't care so much if they (10:16) won a cup or a medal or not, because they have their own goals, they have their own lives, (10:25) they have their own ambitions, and I have my own goals, I have my own ambitions, I have my own (10:35) future, so I didn't skip work, I didn't postpone my important projects, tasks, (10:44) going to that hockey game, I didn't want that hockey game to distract me, to avoid me from (10:50) making progress, so many of us, similarly, we have people, we have events, activities that they try (11:00) to take so much of our time, so much of our energy, consume so much of our finances, but it's super (11:08) important that we become aware of them, are they good for us or not, are they distracting us or not, (11:14) are they avoiding us or preventing us from moving forward, from following a direction, (11:21) from making a progress, I can't leave my work and do things for others, I can't leave my goals, (11:31) my business, my dreams, and go serve other people's needs, I can't let bad habits prevent me from (11:41) moving forward, from making progress, I can't let constantly life urgencies take up most of my time, (11:51) most of my energy, you see, so many people fail in entrepreneurship because they are trying to be (11:58) too cool, too kind, too generous with others, they act, they behave like they're rich people (12:06) or like they're successful entrepreneurs and they haven't built their businesses yet, especially the (12:13) ones that are at the early stages of their entrepreneurship journey, they're just starting (12:21) out their businesses, they go out, they do a big mistake by donating most of their time, most of (12:30) their money, most of their energy with others, trying to be too cool, too kind, too generous, (12:39) trying to be too nice for others, they do things for others but they don't do things (12:47) for themselves, they work for others but they don't work for their future, for their own goals, (12:54) for their own dreams, so I'm telling you, I have done this mistake many times (13:01) but I learned a big lesson from this failure, I will not let any activity, any event, any (13:11) people, any individual prevent me from working on my future, I will not let any of these (13:21) prevent me from making progress, my future, my health, my own well-being, my happiness is my (13:30) number one, is my priority and I can't fail anymore in entrepreneurship because I will end up (13:40) regretful, I will regret, I will constantly blame myself, criticize myself for being undisciplined, (13:49) for letting bad habits fail me, so we can't make the same mistake, we can't let other people, (14:00) other events, activities take up most of our time or prevent us from making progress, you see (14:07) successful entrepreneurs, successful people, they try to avoid noises, distractions from their (14:16) entrepreneurial journey, if they see something or someone that is not important, they just walk (14:24) away, if they attend any meeting and they find that that meeting is boring, is not beneficial, (14:32) they are not learning anything from that meeting, they just leave the meeting, (14:36) they leave the conference, they just walk away, they don't waste their time, (14:41) they don't waste their time, their best assets with noises, with distractions, with people, (14:50) with activities, with events that are not necessary, that are not relevant, so it's super important (14:58) that we become aware of those habits, that we constantly build good, healthy, positive habits (15:07) and that we protect our focus, our time, our energy, our productivity from other people, from other (15:15) events, from other activities, you see attending that event or going to that activity or spending (15:22) time with that person or that individual, it might not make me happy, I might not get anything or (15:35) return anything from that, but I know I will get so much return, I would feel so happy whenever I'm (15:44) in a progress mood, whenever I'm making progress, whenever I'm following my direction, my path, (15:50) my trajectory, I know I will feel so happy, so successful in my days, whenever I'm super committed, (15:58) whenever I'm very laser focused, so I know sometimes I need to say no, no to others, (16:10) no to other activities, events, places, things in life that are not related to my entrepreneurship (16:19) journey, I have to say no, because saying no to others means saying yes to your future, to your (16:28) goals, to your dreams, so do not let this fail you, do not make the same mistake, reflect on your days, (16:38) on your entrepreneurial daily life, are you moving forward, are you following a direction, are you (16:45) aligned with your goals, with your ambitions, are you doing the hard work, are you really (16:52) laser focused or are you fake focused, are you really getting closer to your outcome, to your (17:00) results, to your goals, to your dreams daily in your entrepreneurial life or are you moving (17:09) away, are you doing the hard work, are you committed, are you getting things done, are you working on (17:18) those projects, on those tasks, on your to-do list or are you just spending most of your time (17:25) outside your entrepreneurship journey and you're constantly stacking so many projects, so many (17:32) tasks that are uncompleted for weeks ago, for months ago, are you getting important work done (17:42) in your business or are you just constantly getting distracted and you're just avoiding that (17:49) work, so it's super important that we ask ourselves these questions, it's super important that we find (17:56) a quiet place and set a timer and we sit and we reflect and we do a journaling with ourselves (18:05) so we can identify those issues, those problems that are keeping us stuck, that are making, (18:14) preventing us from making progress, it's super important that we become aware of those habits (18:20) that are constantly showing up and they are avoiding us from doing the work, (18:28) it's super important that we protect our time, our energy, our focus, our productivity, (18:35) our business, our goals, our dreams from other people, from other activities and events, (18:42) so your actions, your daily choices dictates your behaviors, your habits, (18:51) so do not make this mistake by showing up for others by trying to be too cool, too generous, (19:01) too kind and donating your time, your energy, your finances, your money and act like you're rich (19:10) or behave like you're a wealthy person, when you are starting out, when you are building a (19:16) successful business in this process, in during this time, you need to be laser focused, you need (19:24) to work very hard because this is the hardest part of entrepreneurship, it's getting your work (19:32) done, it's trying to build and grow your business, this is the hardest part of entrepreneurship, (19:41) but in the future, after you become very successful, after you become very wealthy, (19:48) then you can donate some of your time, some of your money, some of your energy for doing (19:56) volunteer work or for helping others or supporting others, but not at this time, (20:03) when you are trying to build a business or launching a business or not at the early stages (20:10) of your entrepreneurship journey or not when you are just starting out your entrepreneurship (20:16) journey, this is a very critical point that we need to become aware of, we can't just donate (20:25) our time, our energy, our effort, our focus, our finances with others and expect to see results, (20:35) we can't donate all of these assets and expect to become a successful entrepreneur, (20:42) this is one of the recipes of failures in entrepreneurship, it requires laser focus, (20:49) it requires your time, your energy, your effort or are you spending them on your goals, on your (20:57) dreams, on your business or are you spending them for other activities, for other events, (21:02) for other people, so that's it, that's what I got for you in this episode, this is one of my (21:11) favorite episodes that I have published so far because I'm talking about my own failure in (21:18) entrepreneurship journey, I didn't know anything when I just started out in my entrepreneurship (21:25) journey, I didn't know what I was doing, I didn't know that I was spending more time, (21:31) most of my time, most of my finance, most of my energy with others and not on my business, (21:37) on my goals, on my entrepreneurship journey, so I learned a lot from this entrepreneurship journey, (21:44) I learned from my own past failures, my own past mistakes, the bad habits that I had in my own (21:53) entrepreneurial life, I learned a lot, that's why I wanted to publish this episode because I want (22:00) to share my own personal experience, I want to share my own failure, I want to share my own (22:07) mistake because not so many people they share their own failures, their own mistakes with others, (22:13) they're hiding or they're not interested in sharing, but I like to share these mistakes, these (22:22) failures because I want to teach others, because I want to help others avoid these common mistakes, (22:29) so they can break through in their entrepreneurship journey, please don't forget to follow me on (22:37) iTunes and Spotify, this is where you will get weekly episodes in my podcast, and follow me on (22:44) my social media platform, Instagram, this is where I share content almost every day, every week, (22:54) and I share so many tips, advice and strategies with others, thank you so much for listening or (23:04) watching to this content, and I can't wait to
